Explanation of activity
You are asked to create a fake news story in a way that makes the classification of a story as fake or true a difficult task for any online fake news/claim detection tool. You are not required to pass your story through the online detection tools but you can do so if you like (but it is not part of the evaluation).
You can pick any type of story, at any level of detail and with any subject at your discretion. It is advised that you do not choose a subject very generic because this makes its evaluation either too difficult or too easy and so useless. But again, this is your responsibility. The work needs to be organized as follows:
- Collect a set of resources and organize them in the Platform Truly Media (details will be given in class).
- Use these resources to create your fake story, adding true and false details as you see fit. Whatever details you use, they should be part (and foundable) in the collection of resources that you will have added to the platform.
- Relate your work to the class: you need to keep in mind the relevant parts that we discussed in class and take into account the characteristics of fake news stories that we already discussed. You can refer to the material online or to the papers referred to in this material.
- References : you can include the references you read and use them in the text, provide the references in the requested format and cite them correctly wherever needed. But having references is not a requirement for the text but they should be included in the collection of resources on Truly Media.
- Your story should be between 1 – 2 pages following exactly the instructions given in the template (see the other link in the site)
- Your story should be coherent and not a collection of unrelated facts (if it is it will be rejected from the beginning).
Other important points:
- The project is individual work; I reserve the right to ask/send you questions after I read your report or ask questions orally.
- Type of submission : preferred type is PDF, accepted types are PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT
- Use of online tools for generating the report is prohibited and will be considered plagiarism.
- Submission of your work : you should submit your work through the site (the link is available in the same section of the site). If you have problems please contact me. The site will stop accepting submissions automatically!
- Size of submission : up to 1,5 GB (too big, I mention this just in case …)

Analysis of student understanding
- The students will experiment and understand the creation and dissemination process of fake news items: how one is created, how one is exploiting people’s misconceptions, how one is based on people’s attention to specific online items/trends.
- The students will research the resources needed to create the fake news item and try to understand how you can combine different credible news items to create a story that is fake at the end.
Assessing and evaluation
The project is assessed by submitting a report that describes the fake story and gives the elements deemed necessary to attract the attention and the interest of the reader. The student also stores, evaluates and submits through the Truly Media platform the resources used to create the fake story; from this the depth and breadth of the sought information is assessed and the way this information is used becomes visible.
The story is also evaluated by its ability to pass fact-checking in various well-known web sites like snopes.com, politifact.com, etc.
Finally, the story is evaluated for its complexity, depth and presentation that allows masking the fake part correctly and successfully (and regardless, for this part, if the story passes or not the fake news tests).
