Get Started: A Quick and Flexible Guide for Any Educator

The SHIELD Ee-toolkit is structured to provide flexible, ready-to-use educational resources that educators can tailor to their specific teaching goals, subject areas, and student profiles. Its intuitive interface allows users to filter content by themes and activity types, making it easy to locate materials relevant to their instructional needs.

SECTION 1: Instructions for Using the Ee-Toolkit Interface

1. Explore the Filter Menu

On the left side of the interface, you will see two categories of filters:

  • Themes – These represent key topics such as Spreading agents of disinformation, Emotion and disinformation, Scientific research method, and more.
  • Activity Types – These refer to the teaching method or instructional format, such as Group work, Simulation, Lecture, or Resources.

You may select one or multiple options in each category depending on your desired learning outcomes and classroom approach.

For example:

  • Theme selected: Spreading agents of disinformation
  • Activity type selected: Group work

Once your selections are made, click the “Search” button at the bottom of the filter panel.

The Ee-toolkit will return a set of curated educational resources that match your selected criteria. Each result appears as a card that includes:

  • A title
  • Publication date
  • A visual preview
  • An “Activities” label indicating its instructional format

These cards link to complete lesson units or materials that can be directly implemented or adapted to suit your course needs.

Clicking on a card will provide full access to the learning resource. This may include:

  • Lesson plans
  • Classroom activities
  • Suggested assessments
  • Reflective questions
  • Digital tools and supporting media

You may customize these resources to fit your course structure, duration, and learning objectives.

Why This Filtering Feature Matters

The filtering system reflects the Ee-toolkit’s modular and user-centered design, enabling educators to:

  • Quickly locate context-specific content
  • Build full courses or standalone lessons
  • Combine topics and teaching methods in a flexible way
  • Avoid time-consuming manual searches through unrelated materials

SECTION 2: From EeToolkit to Classroom: Design Content That Fit Your Needs

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with the General Curriculum and the Ee-Toolkit

Begin by exploring the SHIELD General Curriculum – available in the Deliverables section of this webpage – and the Ee-toolkit to understand its structure and offerings. The Ee-toolkit provides a range of materials, including lesson plans, activities, and assessment tools, all aimed at fostering media literacy. These resources are drawn by the General Curriculum and are designed to be adaptable, allowing you to tailor them to your specific classroom needs.

Before integrating the Ee-toolkit into your curriculum, review your local and national educational standards related to media literacy and critical thinking. Ensure that the lessons and activities you select from the Ee-toolkit align with these standards, facilitating a seamless incorporation into your existing teaching framework.

The Ee-toolkit’s flexibility allows you to modify lessons to suit your students’ age group, interests, and learning levels. Consider incorporating current events or topics relevant to your students to make the lessons more engaging. For example, you might analyze recent news articles or social media posts to practice identifying disinformation.

Engage students through interactive activities provided in the Ee-toolkit, such as role-playing exercises, debates, and group discussions. These activities encourage active participation and help students apply critical thinking skills in real-world scenarios. By simulating situations where disinformation is present, students can practice strategies to discern credible information.

The Ee-toolkit includes assessment tools to evaluate students’ understanding and progress. Use quizzes, reflection essays, or presentations to assess their ability to identify disinformation and apply critical thinking skills. These assessments can also provide insights into areas where students may need further instruction or support. qualitycharters.org

Encourage collaboration among students by organizing group projects or discussions on media literacy topics. This collaborative approach allows students to learn from each other and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, consider involving other educators or experts in media literacy to provide diverse perspectives and expertise.

After implementing the Ee-toolkit’s resources, reflect on their effectiveness in achieving your educational goals. Gather feedback from students to understand their experiences and identify areas for improvement. Use this feedback to adapt and refine your curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant and effective in promoting media literacy.

By thoughtfully integrating the SHIELD Ee-toolkit into your curriculum, you can equip students with the essential skills to critically evaluate information and resist disinformation. This proactive approach to education fosters informed, responsible, and engaged citizens in our increasingly digital world.
